Hand Finished Frame for Original Robert Hunter Painting
This original Robert Hunter oil on card painting presented the owner with a challenge. He recognised that although charming, it was quite a drab little picture in terms of the colour palette used by the artist. We needed to find a way of “lifting it” whilst remaining sympathetic to the painting itself. Having studied the colour palette in the painting carefully, we agreed to shadow float mount it over a dark grey conservation grade mount board. This colour worked well with the greys and greens in the painting, but remained darker than most of the work, which made the painting appear brighter in tone.
To lighten the whole thing back up again and draw the viewer’s eye into the painting, a chunky contemporary square moulding was selected. This was painted in a pale “greeny grey” using Farrow & Ball “Pigeon”. Again, this tied in with the colour palette used in the painting. The frame was glazed with Museum Glass to protect this collectable artwork from light damage, bearing in mind the piece was on a card substrate of unknown quality / stability.
